Receiving a new job offer is a very exciting time in your career, but it can also be daunting. Resigning from a role can be very difficult and there are often times when an employer will counter-offer with a higher salary in a bid to make you stay.
If you find yourself in this situation, there are at least 3 questions that you should ask yourself before making a decision.
1. Why did you want to look for a new role in the first place?
Although an increase in salary is a great opportunity, you need to remember the reasons that you wanted to move in the first place. Whether you are looking for a new challenge, new culture or new role, consider whether these will be met if you decide to stay where you are.
2. What will happen if you decide to stay where you are?
Your company now know that you were considering making a move so think about how that might affect your future in the company moving forward. Replacing an employee is a timely and costly disruption – is your employer saving themselves from this process or are they committed to your career
3. What is going to make you happy?
You need to consider how your decision is going to affect you long term. Your happiness is the most important thing to think about and whilst money might seem like a good reason to stay right now, it might not be so attractive in a few months.
You need to make sure whatever you decide, it will lead you closer to your goals.
