With companies now set up and working remotely, the way you would normally conduct a face to face interview has also changed. Here are our top tips on how to navigate a video interview.
Download and Test
Make sure you have the right software downloaded onto your computer or phone in advance and run some tests to make sure the speakers and microphone are working. Don’t leave it to the last minute so you can address any technology roadblocks you may hit! Call your recruiter, a friend or family member to do a run through to make sure everything is working correctly. Don’t forget to ensure your laptop or phone is fully charged.
Choose your environment
Find a quiet space with a plain background and make sure there are no distractions or clutter in the camera view. You need to think about the lighting too – you don’t want your face to be in a shadow. Avoid sitting on your bed or sofa or in your car, sitting at a desk or table creates a much better impression.
Dress to impress
You may be doing this at home but ensure that you present just as you would be going in for a face to face interview. A neat and corporate outfit and grooming is essential. Be mindful not to wear busy patterns or stripes as they can be distracting on camera.
Just like a normal interview, be ready to go 5 minutes early, research the company and the role, know your CV and have questions prepared so that you give yourself the best chance of nailing this interview regardless of where you are doing it! Good luck!
