One of the most common questions you will get in an interview is “what can you do for us that other candidates can’t?” which is essentially asking why they should hire you.

This question can be difficult to answer - you want to show that you’re different from other candidates and sell yourself without sounding arrogant. How do you even know what the other candidates are like?

It helps to know what the employer is looking for in order to show them why you are the right person for the job. Do your homework on the company, make sure you understand their values and ensure you fully understand the job brief.

Once you are armed with this knowledge, you can use the following points to answer the question:

1. Keep it about yourself – don’t talk about the negatives of others, but instead focus on your own experience and the qualities that will make you right for the role

2. Describe your strengths – use examples to show how your strengths have benefited your role previously and explain why you think they would be positive for this role

3. Apply you answer to the company – understanding their values allows you to show how yours align and why you would be the right fit in their team

4. Position yourself to get the job – fully understand the requirements for the role
