There are three very important things you must do before every interview. If you do, your chances of securing that job are much higher.

The three must-dos are:

  1. Anticipate
  2. Prepare
  3. Practice

And this is why:

Anticipate

Isn’t it a great feeling when you know exactly what the interviewer will ask and you can respond with the perfect answer? This can be done in every interview if you anticipate what is going to be asked. Sit down and analyse and have a long think about what the job you are interviewing for entails, the type of experience the organisation is looking for in a candidate, and your own CV. Think about the common interview questions you could be asked and the most dreaded question of all – “So tell me about yourself”.

Some other questions you could be asked include:

  • What makes you want to work for our company?
  • What are your strong points?
  • What are your weak points?
  • What can you bring to the team and company?
  • Why are you leaving your current role?

Prepare

You have anticipated the questions you will be asked. Now it is time to prepare to ace your interview. Your preparation should include everything from what to wear to the interview, to how to answer those tricky questions.

It’s great to start with analysing the job description. Write down how you meet each requirement of the role. The process of writing helps lock the answers into your brain, making it much easier to recall those answers in the heat of the interview.

Make sure to research the organisation website, read every news article you can find and tap into your network for information about the organisation.

Lastly, prepare what you are going to wear to the interview, what you need to take with you and how to get to the interview location – make sure you allow plenty of time to spare.

Practice

Now that you have anticipated and prepared, you need to practice! As we are all aware, practice makes perfect!
